Greek Immigration to Quebec (Canada): The Process and the Settlement

GREEK IMMIGRATION TO QUEBEC: THE PROCESS AND THE SETTLEMENT by Efie Gavaki Published in the Journal of the Hellenic Diaspora, Vol, 17/1, 1991 From the article: Migration is not to be seen as the simple geographical movement of individuals.  Whether voluntary or forced, one should look at it as the relatively permanent movement of groups carrying and holding on to cultural, social, psychological, and collective experiences and memories of the place of origin and its history.  Furthermore, immigrants bring with them their dreams, fears, hopes, and expectations of the new world.  Immigration is a movement of systems - social group systems, social organizational systems, cultural systems, and personality systems - all products of one society, to be transplanted into a new one with parallel systems of its own, and quite often very different ones.  During the process of migration, settlement, and adjustment, the immigrant systems will interact and respond to the dynamics a

PIONEERING PRIEST EXHIBIT Pioneering Priests: Establishing the Greek Orthodox Faith in America, a special exhibition funded by The Archbishop Iakovos Leadership 100 Endowment Fund, is now on display at the Shrine. The exhibition features some of the early priests and Hierarchs who helped establish the Greek Orthodox faith in America. . . .  The exhibition was produced by guest curators Dr. William H. Samonides and Dr. Regine Johnson Samonides and is the product of more than a decade of research. Currently featured are 61 priests representing 49 of the earliest parishes in the Archdiocese. Their stories are illustrated with over 100 photographs of the priests, their parishes, and their times gathered from sources across America. . . .  As the Greek-American “Plymouth Rock” dedicated to the first colony of Greek people who came to America in 1768, the Shrine honors all Greek immigrants. It is appropriate that it should host an exhibition that focuses on the contributions of

Village of VAMVAKOU, Municipality of Oinoundos, Region of Lakonia, Greece - FREE Translation of 1872 General Election List

The digital collections of the Greek State Archives offer a wealth of information to those of us interested in Greek genealogy.  As part of their online collection is the "Election Material From the Collection of Vlachoyiannis" .  This includes "General Election Lists" for each Municipality; recorded by community (city, village, settlement, etc.). You can view a scanned copy of each list, printed in the Greek language.  This is a GREAT resource, but very difficult to navigate for those who do not read Greek.  Each row includes:  Line # -  Given Name, Surname - Father's Name -  Age - Occupation. I have translated these pages and made them available in both Greek and English, doing my best to transcribe the information accurately.  I would always recommend viewing the original scanned copies (link below).    - To the best of my knowledge, these lists include all Males who were eligible to vote in the elections.
