THE GREEK CIVIL WAR AND CHILD MIGRATION TO AUSTRALIA by Joy Damousi Published in Social History Vol. 37, No. 3, August 2012 This is an interesting paper that describes the removal of Greek children during the Greek Civil War and the efforts of Australia and other countries to try and reunite families. Excerpt from this scholarly paper: . . . .  I shall briefly outline the circumstances under which children were removed from their families, and Australia's role on the world stage with regard to child migration at this time. The Greek Civil War created conditions whereby children were removed from their homes out of war zones and into neighbouring eastern European countries. It was the first in which incipient Cold War rivalries caused a civil war. Following the Second World War, Greece was alone in its inability to find a peaceful solution to the post-war order. While the leaders of the Civil War were communist-inspired and had external links, it was a local struggle. ...

DOWSING THE PAST:  MATERIALITIES OF CIVIL WAR MEMORIES While doing ethnographic research as part of the Koutroulou Magoula excavation, near the Neo Monastiri Village in Thessaly, anthropologist Konstantinos Kalantzis constantly encountered peoples’ narratives that linked archaeological endeavors to poignant war experiences of the 20 th  century. Two of his senior interlocutors in particular, Christos and Vassilis, frequently expressed the desire to visit the mountainous area where some of their family members spent time during the 1940’s as members of the communist guerilla forces. Veteran war photographer, Kostas Balafas, died last year at the age of 91.  He was renowned for his photographic coverage of the Second World War and the resistance in Greece.  He recorded the Greek army's advance on the Albanian front, the German occupation in Greece, the marches and battles of the resistance fighters, the Civil War, destroyed villages, mourning mothers, as well as celebrations during the liberation of Ioannina. Three Candles:  Stories of Women in Exile As reported by the Greek News Agenda - "A documentary film is to shed light on one of the darkest pages in Modern Greek history:  Three Candles tells the story of thousands of women exiled to the small island of Trikeri, at Pagastikos Gulf. During the 1946-1949 Greek Civil War, thousands of citizens involved with the left-wing Democratic Army, even by mere association, were sent to concentration camps on isolated islands. Trikeri received thousands of exiled women, many of whom were with their children.  The documentary is an account of their struggle to survive, and their desperate efforts to turn an almost deserted island into a place of life and culture." I just borrowed the book "HERAKLES & THE SWASTIKA - Greek Volunteers in the German Army, Police & SS 1943-1945" by Antonio J. Munoz, through the Inter-library loan program.  I believe it was published in 1998 by Axis Europa Books.   It claims to be the "History of the little known Greek collaborationist forces.  The author travelled extensively gathering new data & unpublished photos."  It's actually quite short, only 68 pages, including 36 photographs and 35 detailed battle maps. It includes 23 Greek names (listed below) along with the Table of Contents.  I was disappointed in the book, it has some interesting photographs, but I hoped that it would provide more details regarding the Greek Volunteers.   Good luck with your Greek family history research.
