This is a nice map of GREECE AND THE AEGEAN - Compiled and Drawn, December 1958, in the Cartographic Division of the National Geographic Society for The National Geographic Magazine. THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY DIGITAL COLLECTIONS This site has over 700,000 items digitized.  "It is a living database with new materials added every day, featuring prints, photographs, maps, manuscripts, streaming video, and more." I found some interesting old maps and pictures using the search terms Ottoman Empire, Greece,  Turkey, or Greek immigrant.  

The Digital Library of Modern Greek Studies has the following book, available in digital format that you can download for FREE. Αρχεία περί της συστάσεως και εξελίξεως των Δήμων και Κοινοτήτων 1836-1939 και της διοικητικής διαιρέσεως του κράτους (Files on the formation and evolution of Municipalities 1836-1939 and the administrative division of the State) This is a wonderful genealogy tool to use when researching community name changes in Greece between the formation of the state in 1836 and the year 1939.  It is written in Greek. Quote from Greek family history researcher, Lica Catsakis - " An excellent book for finding to which municipality/community or which county a town belonged at a given time."

There is a new website  TRAVELOGUES , sponsored by the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation.  "This website aims to make known the graphic materials found in travel accounts of journeys to Greece and the eastern Mediterranean from the 15th century onwards, and thus contribute both to students' education and scientific research.  An important part of the editions that constituted the data base of the website belongs to the Historical Library of the Foundation." New Map Old Map In Review: January 2011, Greece Overhauled Administrative Divisions, Regions and Municipalities From 1 January 2011, in accordance with the Kallikratis plan (Law 3852/2010), the administrative system of Greece was drastically overhauled. The  former system of 13 regions, 54 prefectures and 1033 municipalities and communities was replaced by 7 decentralized administrations, 13 regions and 325 municipalities. The David Rumsey Map Collection and Blog This is a really interesting site.  It has over 30,000 historical maps that you can view online, zoom in, etc.  Most of them are rare 18th and 19th century maps.   A search of the word " Greece " gave results for 365 maps. A search on the word " Turkey " gave results for 407 maps. A search on the word " Ottoman " gave results for 10 maps.

www.in2greece.com offers a nice set of maps of all prefectures and regions of Greece. Good for the newbies to Greek genealogy - get a perspective on location of your ancestor's village.   In some cases you can get nice close-up maps per county.  Below is the map of Chania, Crete.

This website has apparently been around for many years, but I just found it.  It is a FREE ONLINE GLOBAL GAZETTEER by a company named Falling Rain Genomics, Inc. and looks like it could be very handy.   There are links for Greece, Cyprus and Turkey.  Here is a screen shot of Greece. Listed are all the Regions of Greece, for example, I clicked on Nomos Lakonias.   In Lakonias it then displays "Place Names" along with the Latitude, Longitude, Elevation (feet), and Population. From this list I picked Sparti.  The top portion of the page for Sparti is shown below.  What I found to be very helpful is that under the main title of the page there is a section titled "Other names": and it lists a variety of spellings for this particular location i.e. Sparte, Sparta, Lacedaemon, Spartē, Spárti, Lakedaimon, Lakedaímon.  As usual, good luck with your Greek family history genealogy research. I just came across a GREAT website, it’s not new, but for some reason I just found it. I guess that’s why the internet can be so exciting to explore. This is a website run by the National Hellenic Research Foundation – it is the “Digital Thesaurus of Primary Sources for Greek History and Culture” . It includes some very helpful information – Name Changes of Settlements in Greece – The collection contains records of the name changes of settlements in Greece between 1913-1996 distributed geographically – you can use the search box or browse through the 4,413 name changes . If you browse through the names in alphabetical order – they are listed as old name – new name. If you find one you are interested in, click on the name, and it will take you to the next screen which will give you all the pertinent data about the name change in both Greek and English i.e. Prefecture, Province, Community or Municipality, Name of Community or Municipality, Code of settlement, Old Name, ...
