This is an update to my August 21, 2016 posting   FROM THE JUNE 11, 2017 NEWSLETTER -  MAJOR STEP FORWARD FOR THE "MUSEUM WITHOUT WALLS" For the past year the items in the Greeks in Washington collection have been photographed and included in a searchable database.  The photos and descriptions of the items in ten categories (textiles, costumes and clothing, photos/slides, documents, audio recordings, film/video/DVD, bound volumes/printed materials, newspapers, art work and other artifacts).  They are now accessible from the home page www.greeksinwashington.org.  Simply "click" on  THE COLLECTION  and follow the prompt. Source:  GREEKS OF WASHINGTON, Spring 2017 The Greeks of Washington Museum recently learned that copies of the  WASHINGTON HELLENIC REVIEW , the Seattle Greek newspaper, published from 1924 to 1936 and housed in the Unites States Library of Congress has been digitized and will soon be available at  www.greeksinwashington.org .  This publication preceded the  AHEPA MENTOR  as the primary medium for news and communication in the Greek community in Seattle.   Original copies of the publication are also available in the Greeks in Washington Archive.

From the Summer 2016 Newsletter --  ARCHIVAL ITEMS TO BE AVAILABLE ONLINE  - The process of “digitizing” the archival items is well underway.  Almost 200 items (of over 600) have been photographed and documented in a searchable database format.  When completed, museum visitors will be able to search the archive from the  Greeks in Washington   home page.  The goal is to have the system activated by the end of 2016.

ONLY FROM THE DNA Published October 2014 on the Greeks in Washington website -  http://greeksinwashington.org John Skimas has found relatives with the original family name of Skamnias, a derivation of the Greek word for sycamore or mulberry tree.  This discovery was made while visiting Greece and using a DNA kit to determine that there was a 99% match with his relative. John’s father, Nicolaos, was from the town of Thermopolis, Greece, just west of the city of Lamia.  He emigrated from the abject poverty of Greece to the United States in 1909 where he worked on the railroad and eventually found his way to Camas, Washington.  Camas had a large paper mill where many Greeks were employed.  Many also worked on the railroad.  Nicolaos worked there for four years until the outbreak of the Balkan War when he returned to fight against the Turks.  Nicolaos remained in...

Published in the September 2014 edition of the Orthodox Observer, page 21 Following are excerpts regarding the history of this parish which began in 1924: The first Greek Orthodox Christians who formed the basis of the community arrived in the Tacoma area beginning about 1901 to escape poverty and being conscripted in the Ottoman Turkish army, a parish history noted.
